Composite Veneers or Dental Bonding

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

Composite bonding (also sometimes called “direct veneers” or “plastic veneers”) is a tooth-coloured plastic resin material. Bonding can usually be placed in one visit and is used many times to repair a smaller chip in a tooth or to make aesthetic improvements in more than one tooth. Bonding usually requires little to no tooth reduction or anaesthesia.

With composite veneers the resin is applied in layers to the tooth and sculpted directly in the mouth to achieve the desired aesthetic the patient is looking for.
The greatest advantage of composite veneers is that it is an additive process that is reversible and can be removed and replaced as needed. Beautiful natural aesthetics can be achieved in the right hands. Aesthetic dentistry is not for all dentists and involves extreme attention to detail. When accomplished properly no one should know you had the treatment.

Composite veneers are much cheaper than porcelain veneers in general, but considering that they do not last as long and need replacing more often they could end up costing more in the long run.

The disadvantage of Composite Veneers are they are more prone to staining and do not last as long as porcelain veneers which also offer more a natural looking, translucent tooth-like appearance.

Porcelain Veneers

The most popular type of veneers are porcelain, which offer a stronger and more durable alternative to its composite counterpart. Porcelain veneers are usually more aesthetic in terms of the spectrum of colour, realism and translucency because they are made in a lab out of porcelain. Porcelain veneers are also more of a long-term solution than bonding, as they do not stain, discolour, and are stronger than bonding.

As it requires few appointments and involves a Lab fees, it normally incur more fees than Composite veneers.

SUMMARY OF THE KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN Composite versus Porcelain Veneers

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

Composite versus Porcelain Veneers: Material

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

Composite resin is an artificial material, essentially a type of plastic, whereas porcelain is an organic natural glass material. Over time, composite veneers can become dull, stained, and worn because they lack the durable coloration, shine, and structure that porcelain provides.

Composite versus Porcelain Veneers: Aesthetics

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

Porcelain can closely mimic the look of natural tooth material. The handmade ceramic layering techniques that Dr. Castro’s ceramist uses in the laboratory create exquisite porcelain veneers. This highly controlled fabrication process also allows for consistency, symmetry, and optimal coloration among the veneers.

Composite resin, on the other hand, is a liquid plastic material that is layered directly onto each tooth, shaped, and buffed. This process is very challenging to master, and it is difficult to create great-looking results unless your dentist is incredibly skilled in this method. Furthermore, composite material does not resemble tooth material as closely as porcelain, and the aesthetics degrade relatively quickly.

Composite versus Porcelain Veneers:

Optical difference

The translucent properties of porcelain allow the veneer to catch light extremely similar to the way a natural tooth does. While composite resin still looks great, porcelain is unmatched. An incredible benefit of porcelain veneers is they are stain resistant.

Composite versus Porcelain Veneers:  Feel

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

The strength and structural characteristics of porcelain allow the veneers to be made ultra-thin and retain a smooth surface over time. Comparatively, composite veneers can often feel thick and rough. The majority of patients say their porcelain veneers feel virtually indistinguishable from their natural teeth.

Composite versus Porcelain Veneers:  Treatment Time

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

While composite veneers can be completed within the span of one visit, custom porcelain veneers require two visits to your cosmetic dentist. In the long-run, however, high-quality porcelain veneers will require significantly fewer maintenance visits than composite veneers.

Composite versus Porcelain Veneers:  Longevity

With proper fabrication, placement, hygiene, and protection, durable porcelain veneers should last for decades. Dr. Castro provides each of his porcelain veneers patients with a custom night guard to protect their veneers during sleep. Composite veneers, on the other hand, require replacement every few years.

Composite versus Porcelain Veneers:  Treatment Process

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

For dental teeth bonding, the dentist will first remove the decayed or damaged portions of the tooth. The reduction will be very minimal. Once done, a bonding agent will be applied on the prepared tooth surface. Then, the actual composite filling will be fused to the tooth structure through the action of the bonding material. A curing light will be used to harden the filling. Afterwards, it will be trimmed and polished to blend naturally to the entire tooth.

Much like dental bonding, porcelain veneers are also fused to the tooth structure. The only difference is instead of using composite (plastic), ceramic (glass) is used. Also, the amount of tooth reduction is much greater. The dentist will have to remove structure about 0.5mm on in the entire front surface of the tooth in order to accommodate the veneer.

Dental bonding procedures are performed entirely in a dental clinic. With porcelain veneers the tooth preparation and placement of the restoration for porcelain veneers are performed in the dental clinic. The actual veneer is fabricated in a laboratory by a dental technician.

The porcelain veneers produced by dental laboratories mimic the natural teeth. Technicians utilize layers of porcelain in different shades to get the best aesthetic possible. That is very difficult to do with dental bonding. Even though dentists use different colours of composite to copy the natural shade of the tooth, the results are not as good.

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

Composite versus Porcelain Veneers:   Indications

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

Dental bonding and porcelain veneers are both typically used to manage gaps between teeth, chips/fractures, and misshapen teeth. Tooth bonding is used in small gaps while porcelain veneers are for much larger gaps. Chipped teeth can also be managed using these restorative techniques depending on the size or extent of the damage. Porcelain is much stronger than composite. A fully-cured composite is rock-hard, but is nowhere near as hard as porcelain. That is why porcelain veneers are recommended for cases of extensive damage. Dental veneers can also be used to change the overall colour of the patient’s smile as well as the inclinations and positions of the front teeth.

Patients should note that porcelain has a much more abrasive compared to a natural tooth structure. They need to be very careful when biting, especially if the veneer opposes a natural tooth, because porcelain can wear the tooth enamel faster than an opposing natural tooth.

For kids, dentists typically like to stick to dental bonding mainly because it is less invasive and anaesthesia is not necessary most of the time. More importantly, kids are growing and so is their bone structure. Many things change over time and the last thing parents need is to spend a lot of money for veneers on someone that is still growing. When they reach adulthood, the veneers may not look as good and need to be redone.

Furthermore, the oral hygiene habits of a kid are not as good as an adult and the veneer may fail because of that. Porcelain veneers are an investment and a person wants to make sure they last for as long as possible.

Composite versus Porcelain Veneers:  Treatment Limitations

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

Dental bonding or porcelain veneers may not be recommended with patients who have problems with their occlusion (bite). If the patient’s occlusion has been traumatized either because their teeth do not line up or they have a habit like teeth grinding, neither dental bonding nor porcelain veneers may be suitable for them. The composite or porcelain will only fracture if placed in a traumatic environment. Composite wears easily while porcelain is brittle.

Composite versus Porcelain Veneers:  How long do they last?

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

Porcelain veneers are resistant to staining. They do not change colour over time. The patient’s teeth will get darker but the restorations will not. That is why patients who are planning to undergo teeth whitening are advised to do so first before getting their restorations. That way, the shade of the composite or porcelain will be matched to their already-whitened teeth.

Dental bonding lasts for an average of 5 to 7 years while porcelain veneers last 10 to 15 years  or more with proper care. They might even last a lifetime as long as they were done properly and the patient does an excellent job of maintaining them.

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

Composite versus Porcelain Veneers:   Common Misconception

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

Patients usually think that doing porcelain veneers hurts. It does not. Usually, there is some discomfort but it is nothing that cannot be managed by administering local anaesthesia. Most dentists use anaesthetics when doing veneers. If the patient is afraid of needles, there is always some topical anaesthesia that can be used before the injection. Once the topical is applied, the tissues get numb and the patient will not feel the needle. Dental bonding produces no discomfort to the patient.

Another misconception is how long dental bonding and porcelain veneers last. Patients seem divided on whether dental bonding lasts longer or if porcelain veneers last longer. On average, dental bonding lasts for a good five to seven years while dental veneers last for 15 years or more. They can last even longer as long as they are properly maintained. That is where another misconception comes in. If a dentist tells patients that porcelain veneers will last for 15 years, they think the veneers will just fall off after 15 years. That is not the case. Veneers do not come off for any reason. They get removed either because they fractured or there is leakage and recurrent decay underneath.

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

Composite versus Porcelain Veneers:   Estimated Cost

Composite Veneers versus Porcelain Veneers Melbourne CBD

Top-quality composite veneers may be half as much or a third of the cost of porcelain veneers; however, if you are looking to make a lasting investment in your smile, porcelain veneers are the superior choice. Over time, the maintenance and replacement costs that can accumulate with composite veneers make a good case for the long-term affordability and value of porcelain veneers.

While composite veneers can provide a quick, temporary cosmetic fix for chipped, damaged, gapped, or discoloured teeth, high-quality porcelain veneers are always the right choice when you desire natural-looking, long-lasting results.

Composite bonding can cost anywhere from $350 to $700. Obviously, the repair of small damages is cheaper while teeth that require greater coverage will cost more. The price is also dependent on the cosmetic complexity of the case.

Porcelain veneers, on the other hand, can cost anywhere from $700 to $2,500. One factor for the variation in price is the laboratory where the veneers are made. High-quality labs charge three times as much as an average lab and that is reflected in the price that the dentist charges the patient. These labs usually have good-quality porcelain and a very skilful ceramic artist. The veneer is only going to look as good as the artist who made it. So for a really talented ceramist, dentists usually go for a high-end laboratory.

Tooth Bridge vs Implant?

Tooth Bridge versus Implant. Which is Better?

There are numerous methods for replacing a lost tooth, but the dental industry provides two of the most convenient and thus popular technologies to make your smile shine. You’ve probably heard of dental Tooth Bridge or Implant. And that is unquestionably a decision you must make in this situation. So, let’s talk about the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

One of the most important factors to consider when deciding between a dental Tooth Bridge or Implant is the condition of your other teeth. If they’re also problematic, it’s probably best to go with an implant, which is known for preventing other teeth from breaking or losing strength. A bridge is designed to use your natural teeth as a support unit for a replacement tooth.

More information is provided below to help you decide whether to get a dental Tooth Bridge or Implant. Make the right decision and enjoy your new teeth! And don’t be afraid to contact us if you’re unsure whether you can make the right decision on your own.

Tooth Bridge versus Implant

Tooth Bridge versus Implant

What are Dental Implants?

This is a good option if you have lost a tooth or teeth to an injury, periodontal disease, or other reasons. A dental implant is a titanium post (acting as a tooth root) that supports a crown. It is surgically inserted into the jawbone where it will then fuse (or osseointegrate) into the jawbone to ensure that it is anchored in position. After the osseointegration process is finished (usually 3-6 months), an abutment is attached to the post frame. It protrudes above the gum line to provide the area where the dental crown is cemented or screwed into.

Pros and Cons of Dental Implants

Pros

  • Little maintenance
One big perk about dental implants is that they can last a lifetime when they are high quality. They require little maintenance.
  • Natural looking
Dental implants look, feel, and function like a natural tooth. They are strong and stable, and they keep your smile confident.
  • Protect Your Jawbone
Having an open space in your mouth where a missing tooth once was puts your jawbone at risk for deterioration. Dental implants stimulate and preserve natural bone growth, which helps prevent bone loss.
  • No Strain on Teeth
Unlike a bridge, an implant stands on it’s own support without putting strain on other teeth. This helps to protect surrounding teeth.

Cons

  • Surgery
Because the implant must be attached to your bone, it requires surgery. And there are always risks to consider with any kind of surgical procedure. Some of the risks include infection, nerve damage, damage to surrounding teeth, jaw fractures, and more.
  • Time
Getting a tooth implant is not something that can be done in a single office visit. Bone heals slowly, to the entire procedure can take several months, around 3 months on the fast end.
  • Cost
Now, the cost will vary depending on the type of implant and the conditions of the tooth issue. Still, the high cost associated with getting a dental implant is often what deters people from considering this procedure.

What are Dental Bridges?

Dental tooth bridges are used to bridge the gap between one or more missing teeth. The bridge is supported by the natural teeth or implants on either side. It is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on each part of the gap. The anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth, and the false teeth that lie in between are called pontics.

Types of Bridges

Traditional bridges

This type of Dental tooth bridges is most common one, and it’s usually made of either ceramics or porcelain fused to metal. The bridge is created by a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the gap, and the pontic lies in between.

Cantilever Bridges

This type of Dental tooth bridges is not as common as the traditional bridge, and it is not recommended for the back of the mouth where it will receive much force. Cantilever bridges are used when there are adjacent teeth found on only one side of the gap of missing teeth.

Maryland Bonded Bridges

With this type of Dental tooth bridges, the resin-bonded bridge is made of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or plastic teeth supported by a porcelain or metal framework. The existing teeth on either side of the gap are bonded to the metal or porcelain wings on the bridge.

Pros and Cons of Dental tooth bridges

Pros

  • Simple procedure
Unlike dental implants, bridges don’t require surgery, making bridges a lot less painful. All it takes is a simple dental procedure to get your teeth fixed.
  • Faster
It’s much quicker and easier to get dental bridges (only a few weeks at the most), whereas implants may take several months.
  • Affordable
Bridges are generally more affordable than implants, and they are still strong and supportive for your mouth.

Cons

  • Less Aesthetically Pleasing
Bridges are not as natural looking as implants, and therefore are not as aesthetically pleasing.
  • Periodic Replacement
Bridges need to be replaced periodically. They should be changed every 5-7 years.
  • Damage Natural Teeth
Adjacent teeth undergo a lot of preparation that requires the removal of a considerable amount of tooth structure.

INDICATIONS OF DENTAL  TOOTH FIXED BRIDGE

A fixed bridge will accomplish the following:

  • Replace missing teeth.
  • Help balance and restore a normal bite.
  • Help prevent unnatural stress on the dental ridge.
  • Prevent over-eruption of opposing teeth.
  • Prevent shift and tilt of adjacent teeth.
  • Help prevent formation of decay in abnormal areas.
  • Help retard the onset of periodontal disease.

Advantages of Dental tooth bridges

A Dental tooth bridges has a number of advantages, which account for their popularity. These advantages include the following:

  • A Dental tooth bridges is an effective solution for tooth replacement because it offers both aesthetic and functional correction. Functionally, the bridge assists with the chewing of food and enables patients to eat and chew normally as all gaps would have been closed. Aesthetically, it closes all embarrassing gaps and helps to restore and improve one’s confidence and self-esteem. More so, a dental bridge is hardly noticeable because it fits closely to the mouth structure.
  • A Dental tooth bridges helps to maintain the long-term structure of the mouth. Normally, a gap as a result of a missing tooth can cause the neighboring teeth to shift gradually or spread out, thus causing a bite issue. But the dental bridge helps to hold the neighboring teeth firmly in place, reducing any risk of shifting and consequent bite issues.
  • A Dental tooth bridges helps to reduce the risk of jawbone loss, thus maintaining the facial structure. Missing tooth tends to cause the jawbone to deteriorate gradually but the dental bridge prevents this.
  • Dental tooth bridges feels exactly like the natural tooth and requires a short time for patients to get accustomed to it.
  • Unlike a denture, the dental bridge does not require regular removal and cleaning as it can be easily cleaned and maintained like the natural teeth by observing proper oral hygiene practices.

A major shortcoming with the Dental tooth bridges is that it relies on abutment teeth for supports. The abutment teeth may not have sufficient strength to support the dental bridge and may collapse as a result necessitating them to be replaced by dental implants.

Considering the advantages and shortcoming of a dental bridge, it can be concluded that a dental bridge is a good idea for patients looking for affordable and reliable ways to replace their missing tooth/teeth.

Which is Better Bridge or Implant? | Tooth Bridge vs Implant Melbourne

The risks of using Dental tooth bridges

  • An ill fitting bridge can cause decay of the tooth under the crown.
  • There is a reduction of the structures of natural healthy teeth to accommodate the appliance in place.
  • The restoration can collapse if the supporting teeth are not strong enough.
  • In the long run, they need to be eventually replaced.

Now that you know the advantages and risks of dental bridges, you can make a wise decision whether to choose this option to replace missing teeth or consider another option. You need to discuss this with your dentist so that your further questions regarding dental bridges are addressed.

Which is Better Bridge or Implant? | Tooth Bridge vs Implant Melbourne

What about the cost difference between Dental implants and Tooth bridge?

A bridge is generally less expensive than an implant when you look at the up-front costs. As with any major procedure, find out what your dental plan covers – many plans will pay for a bridge but not an implant.

Dental tooth bridges Cost

Dental bridges are an affordable tooth replacement option. The cost of dental bridges varies, and with insurance the costs reduce significantly, but most patients pay between $900 and $2500 per tooth/unit multiply by the number of teeth being replace. For a bridge to replace a single tooth, it would involve bridging  3  teeth together with traditional  3 unit Fixed bridge. You’ll pay more for an all-porcelain bridge than for a metal or porcelain-fused bridge. If you need a cantilever bridge or your dentist needs to do extensive work on your remaining teeth in order to support the bridge, your costs may be higher.

 Alternative tooth replacement options

The two primary tooth replacement options in addition to bridges include:

  • Dental implants- A permanent, full tooth replacement option, dental implants provide the most complete and natural looking solution for tooth replacement.
  • Full or partial dentures- Dentures, either full or partial, offer a minimally invasive tooth replacement option for the visible or upper portion of the tooth. Unlike dental bridges, dentures are removable.

Alternative to Dental Implant

Alternative to Dental Implant in Replacing Missing Teeth

Missing teeth are not only unsightly, but the absence of teeth can also lead to oral health issues and bite misalignment. Dental bridges are one of several options for replacing missing teeth.

Risk if you don’t replace missing Tooth

A patient can incur negative effects by leaving the missing tooth untreated. Leaving spaces in the mouth can cause multiple teeth to shift and move which can cause occlusion (biting problems) and/or TMJ jaw issues. Periodontal problems (gum disease) can also occur at the site of the missing and surrounding teeth. Having a dentist treat a missing or badly decayed tooth is critical to preventing any further complications.

Dental Bridges Can Help You Restore Your Smile

These devices function by filling the space left by a missing tooth. The dental bridge holds a replacement tooth in the gap by using the surrounding teeth for support. On either side, dental crowns are placed over the surrounding natural teeth to support the replacement tooth. Because it is anchored to your teeth, the result is an aesthetically pleasing replacement tooth system that is also durable and strong.

Why Should You Get a Dental Bridges?

Each tooth replacement option has its own set of benefits. Dental bridges, for example, are a popular treatment option for some patients due to the following advantages:

  • A fixed appliance is more convenient because you do not have to remove it every night like removable dentures.
  • Anchoring the appliance to other teeth provides a stable, secure appliance for eating, speaking, and laughing.
  • Restores the appearance of a smile

How do Dental Bridges Work?

A Dental Bridges may be recommended if you’re missing one or more teeth. If you are missing one or more teeth, the gap in your smile can cause many other problems, including additional decay, sensitivity, tooth drift, gum disease, and a change in your bite . Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. The imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease and in many cases, too, a missing tooth can cause the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, to become misaligned, a condition referred to as TMD.

A Dental Bridges is a restoration designed to fill the gap caused by a missing tooth and prevent additional dental problems. Dental Bridges are cemented to the natural teeth or implants surrounding the empty space. These teeth, called abutments, serve as anchors for the bridge. A replacement tooth, called a pontic, is attached to the crowns that cover the abutments. As with crowns, you have a choice of materials for bridges, based on the location of the missing tooth (or teeth), its function, aesthetic considerations and cost. Porcelain or ceramic bridges can be matched to the color of your natural teeth.

Who Makes a Good Candidate for Dental Bridges?

If you have one or more missing teeth, you may be a good candidate for a Dental Bridges. It is critical to have healthy adjacent teeth for bridge support or sufficient jawbone density for an implant-supported bridge. Gum disease and other oral health issues may have an impact on candidature and should be addressed before your bridge is installed.

Are Fixed DENTAL BRIDGES NECESSARY?

Many people who lose one or more back teeth are often inclined to do nothing to replace them. Unfortunately, losing a tooth can start a vicious cycle of destruction. In a normal, healthy mouth, your teeth have a natural balance. Each upper tooth contacts the corresponding lower tooth, allowing for a well-balanced chewing function. Losing a tooth quickly destroys this balance. A functional mouth has 28 teeth (14 upper and 14 lower – excluding wisdom teeth). They work as a team. Each tooth has three companion teeth: the two adjacent teeth and the opposing tooth. These companion teeth provide support and stability. Drifting, shifting, periodontal disease, and abnormal decay areas are some of the problems that can occur when your tooth loses the support of a companion. The adjacent teeth shift inward toward the missing space. This causes open spaces between the adjacent teeth and their companion. The opposing tooth will drift down into the space left behind by the missing tooth. This causes interferences which will affect eating and talking. As the opposing tooth drifts out of its socket, the bone support is lost and the tooth will inevitably be lost as well. This cycle is a domino effect which will lead to the loss of many otherwise healthy and vital teeth.

In summary, this is what happens:

  • The opposing molar will super-erupt.
  • The unprotected ridge is subject to trauma.
  • The neighbour teeth tilt, destroying proper functional balance.
  • Shifting teeth create spaces which food will become trapped and lead to decay and periodontal disease.
  • Bone is destroyed as teeth drift and tip.

What to Expect with a Dental Bridges?

The process of having a dental bridges inserted is a pretty simple and painless procedure. Usually, you will need to visit your dentist at least twice for this process. During the first appointment, your dentist will prepare the teeth on either side of the gap. If they are to be covered in crowns, your dentist will file away some of the enamel, reshaping the tooth to create space for the crown. He or she will then make an impression of your teeth to send off to a lab.

The lab will use this impression to create a custom Dental Bridges for your mouth, which your dentist should receive within a few days. In the meantime, your freshly prepared teeth will be covered with temporary crowns to prevent sensitivity and damage until your bridge comes in. You should not feel any pain during this appointment because your dentist will inject a local anaesthetic to numb the nerves in your teeth.

At your second appointment, your dentist will remove the temporary crowns, if present, and then cement your Dental Bridges into place. In some cases, your dentist may first use a temporary cement. This allows you to evaluate the fit and feel of the bridge in your mouth over the coming weeks. You’ll return for a third appointment during which your dentist will talk to you about the fit, make changes if needed, and then permanently cement the bridge into place.

Procedure in Making Dental Bridges

We prepare your teeth on either side of the space for the false tooth. Teeth on either side of the space are prepared to accommodate for the thickness of the crown. We will then make an impression, which will serve as the model from which the dental laboratory will be make the Dental Bridges (false tooth and crowns). A temporary bridge will be placed for you to wear while your bridge is being made until your next visit. This temporary bridge will serve to protect your teeth and gums. On your second appointment, the temporary bridge will be removed. Your new permanent bridge will be fitted and checked and adjusted for any bite discrepancies. Your new bridge will then be cemented to your teeth.

Caring For Your Dental Bridges

A dental bridges depends on the health of the adjacent teeth and gums for support. To care for your bridge, brush and floss normally after each meal.

Superfloss and floss threaders are effective tools for keeping the area under your bridge plaque-free. Superfloss has a stiff end that helps in threading it through tight areas and a fuzzy tufted segment that can remove plaque as you floss. Insert the superfloss under the bridge and use it to floss the sides of the teeth and under the bridge. Floss threaders also aid in removing plaque. Pull out about 18 inches of floss, insert it through the floss threader, and then use the threader to insert the floss under your bridge. Floss to remove food particles and plaque from the sides of the teeth and under the bridge. Use the same procedure to care for your temporary bridge, being careful not to dislodge it as you brush and floss. If it does come loose, gently re-attach it; call your dentist if your temporary bridge frequently comes loose.

Recovery and Dental Care After a Dental Bridges

You might have a little sensitivity in the teeth to which your bridge is attached in the days following your appointment. This is just because your dentist has activated the nerves in these teeth while working on them. The sensitivity should wane in the days that follow. Many patients find that chewing and speaking with a bridge is a little awkward at first, especially if the teeth have been missing for some time. However, the body adapts quickly, and before long, you will be able to chew on your bridge just like you would a natural tooth.

With proper care, a dental bridges can last 15 years and often much longer. Here are some ways to properly care for your dental bridge:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes, being sure to brush around the bridge just like you would a natural tooth.
  • Floss between the bridge and your gums to remove oral bacteria that accumulate in this area and may cause gum disease. Your dentist or dental hygienist can show you how to do this.
  • Use an antiseptic mouthwash to help kill germs in the tissues surrounding your bridge.
  • Visit your dentist for regular checkups to ensure any issues with your bridge are detected early.

There are no serious dietary restrictions that you must follow when you have a dental bridge. However, you should minimize your intake of overly crunchy and chewy foods, as these place excess strain on the teeth supporting the bridge and may contribute to shifting of these teeth over time. If you eat something sticky or gooey, try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth from the bridge.

If you ever begin to experience pain or aching in the teeth to which your bridge is attached, contact your dentist. Also see your dentist if the gums around your bridge become swollen, sore, red, or prone to bleeding. These are signs of gum disease that must be addressed to prevent decay in the teeth to which your bridge is attached.

Other Alternative to Dental Implant in Replacing Missing Teeth Melbourne

It is unfortunate when someone loses a tooth; however we now have several options to replace it. Listed below are most common ways to replace a missing tooth.

1.Removable Partial Denture

It can be very embarrassing when missing front teeth. A removable partial denture, which is worn during the day, can replace one or many missing teeth.  Sometimes a partial denture may need metal clasps to help it stay in the mouth.  Unfortunately, these metal clasps may be visible when speaking or smiling.  Another disadvantage of a removable partial denture is that they can move a little when speaking or eating, which can be uncomfortable.  We recommend taking them out at night and soaking them in a cleaning solution.  With a partial denture there is no need to file down any teeth, and this option is the most economical.  A full denture can replace all missing teeth.

2.Temporary Denture

temporary denture is a short term solution for a missing tooth. We call it a “flipper” because it flips in and out easily.  This is used when the tooth will be restored in the future with a bridge or an implant, but we are waiting for the site to heal.  These are much like a removable partial denture, but usually less sturdy, less bulky, and less expensive.  We do not alter surrounding teeth when we make a flipper.

3.Snap on Smile.

They are removable appliance that can functions a lot of ways from affordable smile transformation to temporarily replacing a missing teeth.

4.Do Nothing

There is always the option to do nothing. When a tooth is removed, the bone melts away and the other teeth in the area will shift to fill the gap.  This can sometimes create a difficult place to clean and lead to other problems like bone loss or decay around the existing teeth.

COMMON DENTAL CROWN PROBLEMS AND THEIR SOLUTIONS

1. Tooth decay

Can your teeth rot under a crown? Yes, it can.  Of course, it is not the crown that gets the decay, but the tooth.  When this happens, the decay quickly spreads underneath the crown.  Usually there is metal underneath the porcelain or the crown is made entirely of metal.  This metal makes it impossible for the tooth structure inside of the crown to be seen on a radiograph (x ray).

Depending on the size of the tooth involved, there can be precious little tooth structure left under the crown before the pulp (nerve) is destroyed by the decay.  If this happens, a new crown will not fix the tooth.  Under these circumstances, a root canal will be needed along with a new crown—assuming the tooth is able to be saved at all.  Additionally, a new crown on a tooth that has already had a crown will without question be much more difficult to do than the first crown.  This is because the margins (edges of the crown) will need to be deeper to cover up the area where the decay had to be removed after the old crown was taken off.

In conclusion, crowns are long lasting.   Decay under a crown is a common way that a crown eventually fails.  Early detection of decay at the edges of a crown reduces the amount of destruction of tooth caused by decay.  A high degree of diagnostic skill is needed to detect early decay on the margins (edges) of a crown.  Timely replacement is needed in order to avoid a root canal, or even to retain the tooth when decay is detected under an existing crown.  Ask your dentist how you can maintain your crowns for the longest time possible.

How to Avoid Getting Decay under your Crown?

The easiest way to avoid having a crown get decay underneath it is to pay special attention at home to the margins (edges) of the crown where it attaches to the tooth.  Brush and floss are mandatory for long life of a crown.  As well, special cleaning tools may be needed.

Prevention is better than a cure in almost every context regarding dentistry, keeping on top of your oral hygiene can save you thousands in procedures.

2. Dental Crown fall off or came out

Sometimes, crowns fall off. Usually this is due to an improper fit, a lack of cement, or a very small amount of tooth structure remaining that the crown can hold on to because of recurrent decay under the crown. If this happens, clean the crown and the front of the tooth. You can replace the crown temporarily using dental adhesive or temporary tooth cement that is sold in stores for this purpose. Contact your dentist’s office immediately either for recementation of your old crown if it is still salvageable or a new crown might be needed.

3. Poor crown placement

Another common crown issue is improper crown placement over the affected tooth. In some cases, a poorly fitted crown will have an effect on your bite. When you clench your teeth, you may notice that your crown is uneven, resulting in a wonky bite that can cause discomfort in the future. Only a dentist can address and resolve this issue. Furthermore, as previously mentioned, poor crown placement can lead to bacteria creeping in and affecting the tooth, which can cause discomfort and necessitate costly repair work.

How to Repair an Improperly Placed Crown: You’ll need to see your dentist again so they can determine what additional work is needed.

4. Teeth that are sensitive

It is not uncommon for your tooth or teeth to become sensitive following your dental crown procedure. You may discover that eating certain foods and the temperature of food and drink affects your tooth sensitivity.

If the sensitivity persists after the first week or so, there could be another cause. If your dentin is exposed during the procedure (this occurs when your tooth enamel is trimmed away during the crowning process), it may indicate that your crown does not cover your entire tooth.

How do you treat a sensitive tooth following an Crown placment? Consult your dentist if the sensitivity persists after a week or so. You may need to return to the clinic so that they can check what is causing your teeth sensitivity or they’re able to cover any exposed parts of your tooth.

5. Allergic Reactions

Although extremely rare, since your dentist will enquire about allergies, patients can experience allergic reactions to crowns containing metal. Symptoms may include soreness or swelling to the gum or tissue around the crown. Solution: Choose dental crowns made from a porcelain-based material instead of metal. Porcelain crowns can be more  biocompatible and less likely to cause allergic reactions.

6. Tooth under a Dental  Crown Hurts

Dental crowns are supposed to feel comfortable. They shouldn’t be causing you pain after your teeth adjust to the new fixture, so crown pain may be a sign that there’s a problem.

Here’s a look at some of the most common reasons a dental crown can cause discomfort.

Sore Gum Tissue After a New Crown

– Sometimes after a crown is placed, gum tissue may be a little sore and leave you with some pain. It takes a bit of time for a new crown to settle in your mouth, which can result in sensitive, tender gums. An over-the-counter pain reliever is usually enough to ease this mild discomfort.

Teeth Grinding –

Teeth grinding generally occurs subconsciously or while you’re asleep, and if you do grind your teeth, it could irritate your new crown. Your dentist may need to fit you for a mouth guard to prevent grinding.

Tooth Fracture –

The tooth under your crown can still become fractured. If you’re experiencing severe pain, there could be a fracture, small crack, or cavity in the tooth beneath the crown.

Improper Fit and Alignment –

When a new crown is placed, the biting surface of the tooth changes. A crown that’s just a little too high or off just a bit in fit can result in tooth pain. If you have pain when you bite down, you may simply need to have the biting surface of your crown adjusted.

Receding Gums –

Over time, your gums may recede around the dental crown. This can expose sensitive areas of your gums and a bit of the tooth root, which can result in discomfort and increase your chance of infection

Infection –

If your crown was placed on an existing tooth without doing a root canal, nerves and connective tissue inside your tooth are still there. The connective tissue and nerves in the center of your tooth are known as the tooth’s pulp. If infection occurs in the pulp, it may cause severe tooth pain.

When Should You See Your Dentist?

If you’re only dealing with mild discomfort after the placement of a crown, it will probably subside on its own. However, if you’re dealing with more bothersome tooth crown pain, you should visit to your dentist.

Knowing if your crown pain constitutes a dental emergency will require consulting with your dentist. If there’s a problem with your bite or the fit and alignment of your crown, it’s something that can be easily corrected by a dentist to eliminate your pain. If receding gums around your crown are causing pain, extending the crown may be an option that solves the problem. If you’re dealing with an underlying infection of the tooth pulp, then the crown may need to be removed and a root canal performed. For a cracked or fractured tooth, your dentist may be able to repair it, or you may need an alternative like an implant or bridge if the tooth can’t be saved.

When it comes to crowns, experiencing moderate to severe pain is not normal. Make sure that you schedule an appointment with your dentist to assess the situation as quickly as possible. Your dentist will be able to determine the right solution to relieving your pain and restoring your smile.

7. Dental crown failure due to breakage, cracks, fractures

Dental crowns made from porcelain and can fracture just like your natural teeth, making cracked or fractured crowns one of the more common problems people experience.

The breaking or fracturing of a dental crown is directly related to what the crown is made of.

When a tooth is prepared for a crown it has to first be shaved down (we call it “prepped”) to remove decayed or damaged parts of the tooth. We also need to make sufficient room for the materials that will be used to construct the crown.

There are quite a few different choices for the materials with which the crown is constructed. Each material has its own specifications for its required thickness. This is so that the crown can be strong enough to withstand the stress of chewing and biting on it. It stands to reason that if the dentist uses a type of porcelain which needs to be 2mm thick in order to achieve enough strength, then reducing the tooth by only 1mm would place the finished crown at risk of possible breakage from chewing or biting. The crown would be strong enough for chewing most things but may not be strong enough to withstand the sudden stress of encountering a cherry pit in a cherry pie, or some other unexpected hard substance in your food.

What happens if my crown chips or breaks? : By applying resin to the affected areas, small chips and fractures can be repaired this way. Larger breaks and chips, on the other hand, are likely to be too difficult or complex to repair, necessitating a full crown tooth replacement.

8. Dental crown with a dark line

A dark line next to the gum line of your crowned tooth is normal, particularly if you have a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown. This dark line is simply the metal of the crown showing through. While not a problem in itself, the dark line is cosmetically unacceptable and your dentist may have to replace the crown with an all porcelain or ceramic one.

9. Dental crown look GREY or  Look Fake

Natural teeth have a certain level of translucence, since the enamel is composed of light-emitting materials. When crowns are too opaque (solid in color), they don’t emit light. As a result, they can look fake next to natural teeth.

Inexperienced  dentists may not be able to duplicate the translucent properties of a natural tooth when creating a crown. Layering too much porcelain or composite resin of one color can create a dense, uniform appearance that does not look natural. The opaque color will be especially obvious in natural light.

Fake-looking crowns that are too opaque may need to be corrected. An experienced  dentist can provide options for a more natural-looking crown material, like all-ceramic.

10. An Uneven Bite

Everyone’s bite is unique, and while labs do their best to achieve a perfect bite, it is common for the crown to need adjusting after it has been cemented in place. When you are numbed for crown placement, it can be difficult to get your teeth to bite together normally because they can feel funny. You may need to adjust your crown after the cementation visit once the numbness wears off.

Solution: If you notice that your crown is interfering with your bite, contact your dentist to have the bite and fit of your new crown checked.

11. Mismatched Colours with your Natural teeth

Dental crowns can be made in a variety of unique colorations to match different people’s teeth, and having one that isn’t the same colour as the rest of your teeth can make you look out of place.

Solution: Before cementing the crown into your mouth, make sure your dentist matches the colour of the crown to the colour of your natural teeth. If the colour is not an exact match, speak with your dentist about having the crown removed and re-done in a different colour.

12. Extreme Dental Wear

When your crown is inserted, the dentist will have to adjust its surface to match the opposing teeth. Dental crowns are extremely strong and can wear down opposing teeth.

Solution: If you believe your crown is abrasive or causing excessive wear, consult your dentist so that the crown’s surface can be adjusted to help prevent additional wear.

Causes of Dental Crown Failure

Poor Oral Hygiene

Like stated above, dental crowns are not vulnerable to decay, but the underlying teeth are. If debris and bacteria are trapped underneath the porcelain crown, a dental cavity can develop. In such a case, the dental crown would be removed so as to access and treat the underlying tooth.

Poorly Manufactured Crowns

A subpar manufactured porcelain crown is more likely to fail later on. This is why it is very important to have your porcelain crown procedure handled by a reputable and professional dentist. The best dentist for dental crown would ensure that your full porcelain crowns fit perfectly in your smile. Unlike a dental bridge, a dental crown is not designed to handle the impact of your bite. So, if your bite brunt is not distributed evenly across your teeth, your porcelain crown may become damaged.

Aesthetics

A dental crown made from porcelain-fused-to-metal material always has a metal base. And after a while, the metal base will start to show through, giving the tooth a dark shade. This is more reason why some patients prefer to replace their metal dental restorations with restorations made of zirconia or porcelain for more appealingly results.

Take Home

One of the simplest and easiest ways to make your permanent porcelain crowns last longer is to observe good oral hygiene practices. Brush your teeth at least thrice daily and floss at least twice daily. When brushing, give careful attention to the base of the porcelain crowns where the dental crown meets the gumline. Refrain from clenching or grinding your teeth and if you suffer from bruxism, quickly consult your dentist, refrain from biting on ice, hard candy or other hard objects and tell your dentist if you suffer from bruxism. More so, it is important to schedule an appointment to your dentist at least twice a year for dental cleanings and checkup. During such dental visit, your dentist would examine your dental health, the state of your dental crown as well as that of the underlying tooth. If the dentist discovers any sign of dental decay, he or she would have to recommend an additional treatment.

Tips to Preserve Your Permanent Crown

Below are some certain lifestyles and behaviours to choose or avoid if you have a dental crown, these include:

  • Using your teeth as tools: never use your teeth as tools, they are never one. Try as much as possible not to use your teeth to open packages, bite your fingernails, tear off tags from clothing, and open crown corks. Doing these can damage both your natural teeth and dental crowns.
  • Brushing and flossing regularly: dental crowns do not require special oral care. They can be cared for just like your natural teeth. Therefore, brushing and flossing at least twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste can make your dental crown last longer.
  • Schedule a regular appointment (or at least every six months) with your dentist for dental cleanings and check-ups: This practice is important whether you have a dental crown or not.
  • Avoid dark-coloured foods and drinks: most dental crowns are made from high-grade porcelain that is resistant to discolouration and staining. However, porcelain crowns can take on a slightly different colour at their edges over time due to the consumption of dark-coloured foods and drinks. Contrariwise, the dark-coloured foods and drinks may change the shade of your natural teeth causing them to look darker or yellowish than the dental crown.

By carefully following the above guidelines, you would be protecting your dental crown and preserving your investment.

How Do I Know When My Full Porcelain Crowns Need Replacing?

Like stated above, dental crown wears in the long run due to daily and the amount of wear is peculiar to each person. Although a dental crown is durable, it is not indestructible i.e. it can be damaged or destroyed over time. Hence, dental crowns need to be replaced if they crack or chip.

Leaving a damaged, cracked, or chipped dental crown in your mouth can increase the possibilities of having dental caries under the porcelain crown. Although dental crowns cannot get decayed, dental cavities can form under them if good and proper oral hygiene practices are not followed. So, depending on the extent of the dental decay and the condition of the dental crown, a dental crown replacement may be necessary. If the dental decay is not properly and immediately taken care of, the underlying tooth may become severely damaged and require a root canal treatment.

A poorly fitted crown, misfit crown, and imbalanced bite are common causes of porcelain crown failure and can also be reasons why permanent porcelain crowns would fail earlier than expected. Luckily, the cost of replacing a failed porcelain crown is covered by most insurance companies as long as the porcelain crown is fitted more than five years old.

More so, accident or hard impact can cause the full dental crowns to fracture or chip.

Do you have a problem with your dental crown?

If you notice any of the above symptoms, it is likely that you will require dental treatment before the problem worsens. Please contact our clinic today for more information on your dental crown issues or to schedule a check-up.

Crowns vs. Large Fillings: What’s the Best Option?

If  your tooth is Badly Broken down and damaged due to decay or trauma, you need to take action to address the problem. Large fillings and crowns are both potential treatments for these types of dental problems, and while they both can be used to make repairs, the procedures are not the same. Compared to large fillings, crowns have a number of key benefits, making them the better option overall for most people. Read on to find out why.

Crowns vs. Fillings

A crown is a ceramic or porcelain cap that is placed over an existing tooth to protect and cover it. With fillings, we use a composite resin or Porcelain inlay or onlay to fill in Badly Broken down and damaged Tooth.

Which is Better Bridge or Implant? | Tooth Bridge vs Implant Melbourne

The Advantages of Dental Crowns

For large areas of decay or Badly Broken down and damaged Tooth, crowns offer a number of advantages over fillings, including:

  • Better protection.

Crowns cover a weakened tooth completely, helping to prevent further damage over time, so that you are less likely to need additional work.

  • More versatility.

Crowns can be used when very little of the natural tooth remains. Fillings have more limitations.

  • Stronger finished results.

When properly placed by an experienced dentist, crowns are much stronger than fillings and less likely to come loose and require repairs.

  • More natural function.

With a crown, normal chewing function is restored. Fillings can alter the shape of the tooth and negatively impact chewing.

Can I get a  filling instead of a Dental crown?

Since crowns are one of the more common restorations that people need on their teeth, most dentist are regularly asked the question, “Do I really need a crown.” It is a completely fair question because even with insurance, crowns may cost you hundreds of dollars at a time.

The reason they are recommended frequently is that a dental crown is often the best option to extend the life of a tooth for years to come. However, there are options in treating a tooth which may delay the need for a crown.

In some cases, while a crown is one option, there can be others. You might opt for a filling instead. Keep in mind, however, that a filling does not prevent you from needing a crown later on. Also, if a substantial portion of your tooth needs filling, a better solution is usually the crown because fillings do not give you the same kind of protection as crowns do. Also, if the filling is extremely large, it can cause the tooth to break, making it irreparable.

Badly Broken down and damaged Tooth Repair, Dental Crown Melbourne

What is Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is also referred to a cap, which is a dental restoration type that fits on the remains of the tooth to restore its natural appearance and protect it from further damage.

A tooth needs a crown (or cap) for strength and support, or when the tooth is missing excessively for a filling. There are many ways to shield a tooth. Usually, a dentist covers the tooth with a material, which is either porcelain, metal (gold) or a mixture of the two.

Dental crowns offer both oral and cosmetic benefits, reinforcing the structure of the tooth and further, helping a person’s smile look natural again.

Typically, dental crowns are custom-made to merge seamlessly with the patient’s natural tooth. They are crafted carefully to match the surrounding teeth in terms of size, color, texture, and shape. It restores the integrity of the patient’s bite.

What are the indications of Dental Crowns?

When decay occurs in a tooth and the resulting cavity has become too large, a dental crown may need to be placed. A dental crown can strengthen the tooth to alleviate pain and improve eating habits. A crown can also be used to correct the bite if damage to the tooth has caused the teeth to become misaligned. Crowns improve the appearance of damaged teeth which can appear discoloured or have obvious decay.

When a tooth has had a root canal procedure performed on it, the tooth is weakened. A dental crown can restore strength to the tooth after a root canal. The majority of teeth that have undergone a root canal procedure will need to have a dental crown placed.

When large fillings have been placed in a tooth, over time, the tooth may fracture due to stress from chewing. When fractures occur within the tooth structure, a dental crown will need to be placed to help preserve the tooth and strengthen it.

In extreme cases, grinding of the teeth can wear away the enamel. When this occurs, the teeth become soft. In order to prevent the teeth from decay, crowns may be placed over them.

Dental crowns are a popular solution and are often used to:

  • Repair chips or cracks
  • Fill unsightly gaps and spaces
  • Correct fractured teeth
  • Restore misshapen teeth
  • Cover damaged teeth
  • Whiten severely discolored, stained, or dull teeth
  • Protect weak teeth from breaks
  • Support dental bridges

What Happens if You Do Not have a Crown Placed?

When patients choose not to have a crown placed, there can be permanent damage done not only to the tooth but the surrounding areas. Decay that is left to its own devices will eat away and will eventually affect the nerve that is housed inside the root of the tooth. This can cause extreme pain and infections. When the nerve is affected, a root canal will be necessary in order to save the tooth. If the damage is too extensive, the entire tooth may need to be removed.

Decay present in one tooth can eventually spread to the surrounding teeth. When this happens, multiple teeth will need dental work or need to be removed if the damage is too severe.

When a tooth has extensive decay or damage, infections can occur. Infections can cause tissue and jaw bone damage. Infections can even spread to other parts of the face and cause serious consequences if left untreated.

Although affordability is always a factor, dental crown costs are typically less before more extreme damage has occurred.

What is the Dental Crown Procedure?

A dental crown is typically placed in two visits. The first appointment includes preparing the tooth in question, which may include sanding and shaping the tooth so that the crown will fit properly, taking an impression of the tooth, and attaching a temporary crown so that you can continue to smile, eat, and function normally without worrying about the appearance of your smile. Our dental lab will create a customised dental crown in between appointments.

The temporary crown is removed during the second and final appointment, and the permanent porcelain dental crown is bonded to your tooth to cover any damage and complete the repair.

Beyond structural repairs, dental crown can be used as a tooth restoration procedure to replace old metal dental work and provide a natural-looking smile makeover and attractive all-white smile. Metal dental work will no longer tarnish your naturally beautiful smile.

Who are great Candidates?

Any patient looking for the most affordable way to improve your smile and affordable cosmetic alternative to permanent dental work is a Snap-On Smile® candidate! Well suited for instant gratification, dental phobic and or medically compromised patients, such as chemo or radiation treated patients.

It can also be used in some cases of periodontal disease, as a periodontal splint for mobile teeth by strengthening the teeth going through periodontal treatment. The splint is also helpful because the patient can easily maintain excellent oral hygiene.

Snap-On Smile® appliance is also ideal for those patients considering a more permanent restoration like veneers, which allows them to take their new smile for a test drive. For others Snap-On Smile® gives them options they never had before.

How Are Snap on Veneers Made?

Getting these veneers is a relatively painless and easy process: Your dentist will take moulds of your teeth and then send them out to a dental laboratory. When they’re ready, your dentist will call you to come pick them up. Your dentist should do one final check to make sure that they fit properly before sending you on your way.

Who is snap-on smile for?

Snap-on smile is for just about everyone!

Snap-on smile offers a simple, life-changing solution for many patients of all ages; those with crooked, stained or missing teeth or with gaps, patients who are not candidates for implants or bridges, people undergoing full-mouth reconstruction or implant procedures, patients who want to avoid shots and drilling, as well as those who simple want better functioning teeth quickly or a preview of what modern dentistry has to offer. Thousands of patients worldwide have already experienced the benefits of Snap-on smile.

It is known as The Snap-On Smile, a new product that can improve any deficient smile through the use of a specially designed resin material that fits over your teeth and can be removed easily for maintenance. It can be made as thin as .5 mm. without compromising its strength. There are 23 color shades available and any smile design can be achieved. Take a look at the following before and after photos and you can see the dramatic results that this new technology allows us to provide for our patients.

With proper home care, the Snap-On Smile should last three to five years. Since the appliance is removable, you must practice good hygiene. In fact, your oral hygiene should be better than usual. Take the appliance off to clean it and to brush and floss your teeth after every meal or snack. You should start off with soft foods and add harder foods as you get more comfortable.

How does it attach?

Snap-On Smile® uses the natural curvature of your teeth to hold in place (due to the materials flexibility) by utilizing the heights of contour of each individual tooth.

Can you wear them everyday? Will it break or tear?

Snap-On Smile® can be worn everyday, all day. We suggest that the patient removes and cleans the appliance before going to bed unless the dental professional advises the patient to wear it while sleeping due to bruxism.

Can you sleep with them on?

Yes! One of the indications for Snap-On Smile® is that it can be used as a brux guard. So, if have permanent restorations like veneers and want to protect them while you sleep, you can use your Snap-On Smile®. For normal dentition, we DO NOT recommend sleeping with your Snap-On Smile® in place.

What is the difference between Snap on Smiles, Clip-on Veneers or Press-on Veneers?

A snap on smile is a procedure offered at the dentist, while Press On Veneers and Clip-on Veneers are provided lab direct with no dentist visit. Press On Veneers and Clip-on Veneers are one-size-fits-all and are marketed as a cheap alternative to conventional veneers and they are certainly cheap – with some being as little as $25 from ebay. Some marketing on Facebook buy 1 get 1 free for only $19.

Press On Veneers and Clip-on Veneers

How the system works is after paying your order online, the company will be sending the patient an ‘impression kit’ and then making their veneers in a laboratory and sending them back for you to wear.  Impressions are needed so the veneers fit over your natural teeth and taking such impressions is a common dental procedure.  We do it dozens of times each day.

We are seriously concerned about people taking impressions at home with no dentist or dental health practitioners present.  You’ll probably get away without causing harm a few times but for some people the practice is going to lead to the most awful dental trauma. Ever considered pulling your own teeth out?  No – we didn’t think so.  But that’s what might happen if you take your own impressions.

Does it come in different shades like crowns and dentures do?

You and your dentist can choose from 23 shades and 18 smile designs, giving you an array of choices for your cosmetically enhanced custom fitted appliance.

What Cosmetic Problems Can They Fix?

According to Dentistry Today, snap on veneers can be used to cover up a variety of dental problems, including missing and gapped teeth. Concerns about yellowed or stained teeth can also be addressed in this way.

But because the structure of your teeth isn’t altered in any way to prepare for these veneers, these veneers cannot correct more serious cosmetic problems such as crooked teeth, which need to be treated by an orthodontist.

An alternative to permanent Veneers – most affordable way to improve your smile

Uncertain of what the outcome of your new smile may be? Are finances a big challenge for your makeover needs? Dr. Castro now has the ability to provide a temporary solution that costs much less than regular veneers. It is the affordable cosmetic alternative to permanent dental work priced at a fraction of the cost of a set of porcelain veneers.

The process of getting your own snap-on smile

1. First Appointment– consult with you on whether the Snap-On Smile appliance is an appropriate solution to your unique needs. If it is an appropriate solution, you can chose to start the process of getting your new smile the same day as your initial consultation. When you indicate you DO want to have your own snap on smile makeover, we will provide you with an exact fee quote for your unique dental needs. Please note that the basic fee covers the most typical smile needs. Every case is unique of course and calls for unique and customized solutions for the best possible long-term outcomes.

During that first appointment will provide you with an oral health screening and a panoramic x-ray for diagnostic and early detection purposes. The screening is designed to spot if any major dental problems exist in your mouth that would affect your comfort, health and your ability to wear your snap on smile appliance without needing alteration or replacement of the appliance because of unforeseen teeth problems.
If significant dental health concerns exist in your mouth, those concerns will need to be taken care of before your own customized snap-on smile appliance is fabricated and inserted.

2. Second visit, we will take an upper and lower impression.

Then we help you select a custom shape, length and your preferred shade that is just right for you. You may choose from different smile designs and shades for your Snap-On Smile. In fact, you can choose a celebrity smile as your very own. Want to look like Jessica Simpson, Halle Berry, or George Clooney? You can. Well, your teeth can, anyway.
Lastly, your case is sent to Snap-On Smile Creations for fabrication and within 2-4 week, your beautiful smile is ready to wear. Ready to be “snapped in” – no cementation or bonding is needed!

3.Third Appointment -Insertion.

At the insertion appointment you will also be given your Snap-On Smile care kit and instructions in how to use the care kit.

No cementation or bonding is ever needed. It will never come loose or fall out.

According to new data released by the Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), facelifts are making a comeback, while soft-tissue fillers (used primarily for lip augmentation) ranked second on the list of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. Here’s something you might not have known: A smile makeover can also result in plumper lips, elevated cheeks, and fewer fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth.

Stunned by the dental secrets that may cause you to reconsider fillers

If you’ve considered getting injectables, a visit to your dentist first might change your mind. From ‘dental face lifts’ to the one treatment that improves everyone’s appearance, here’s why putting teeth first could pay off.

How do teeth help to improve the appearance of your lips, skin, and face in the same way that fillers, injectables, and other aesthetic treatments do?

The teeth and jaw serve as the ‘frame’ or scaffolding of our faces. You can look at someone’s upper half of the face and not necessarily tell how old they are, but the lower third of the face can be the most telling of age. As a result, dentistry and aesthetic dermatology work best when approached holistically – you may believe that you “need” fillers, but dental treatment may be more appropriate, effective, and produce the most natural-looking result.”

Clearly, cosmetic dental treatments can be as expensive and time-consuming as aesthetic treatments, but according to experts, turning to your dentist before an aesthetic specialist or surgeon can not only help you achieve the kind of lift and plumpness that cosmetic facial procedures promise, but the end-result can also be more long-lasting and subtle, and even help to preserve the health of your teeth. Here are a few dental adjustments and treatments that can make a significant difference in addressing visible signs of ageing.

Everyone should think about one treatment

If I were to suggest one dental treatment to lift the face it would be braces. This may sound old-fashioned but hear me out. Just as our collagen levels deplete in our skin as we get older, so our teeth begin to collapse inwards, which ‘shrinks’ our mouth and results in a loss of volume in the lower face.

Braces are fantastic for addressing this by widening the smile while also straightening teeth, adding structure and support to your mouth, and reducing the appearance of sagging. Another benefit is that the results are permanent.”

If you’re worried about looking like ‘Ugly Betty’ while wearing braces, don’t be; dental technology has advanced by leaps and bounds. Invisalign invisible braces are now among the most popular treatments in my practise because they are unobtrusive and barely noticeable to others while achieving impressive results over time.”

If you don’t want to bother with braces or Invisalign, Porcelain Veneer will do the trick.

What causes a face to appear youthful?

A youthful face is full of collagen, giving the skin a smooth, hydrated appearance.

However, it is not only the quality of the skin that is important; what is beneath the skin, the supporting scaffolding, is also important.

Jaw bones are one of the most common parts of your facial skeleton to change over time. When you lose many of your back teeth, your jaw bone gradually shrinks, giving you an aged, ‘squashed’ appearance.

The cheeks recede inwards, the lips constrict, and the chin becomes more prominent.

What has actually happened is that the distance between the bottom of the nose and the bottom of the chin has been reduced, causing your facial balance to be thrown off.

Teeth do not have to be completely missing to give an aged appearance. Teeth that have been worn down by grinding or that have been severely dissolved away due to acid erosion cannot properly support the cheeks or lips.

Some people don’t notice these changes because they happen gradually, while others’ self-esteem suffers as a result.

Your Mouth Influences Your Facial Appearance

Your mouth is an important feature of your facial appearance not only because your smile is one of the first things people notice about you, but also because it serves as the foundation for your facial appearance. Your teeth, skull, and jaw all grow together when your facial appearance is first developing.

They should ideally form a harmonious structure that gives you the best facial appearance. However, as you get older, your teeth can become worn, lost, or shift out of place. Not only will your smile change, but so will your facial shape and proportion.

The misnomer of being “long in the tooth”

Long in the tooth is idiomatically associated with old age, but in dental terms, the opposite is true.

Longer teeth appear more youthful – apparently, 11mm is the’sweet spot,’ but it all depends on the natural shape and size of your teeth, as well as your bone structure. Aesthetic treatments such as veneers and bonding can be used to artificially lengthen teeth, and teeth whitening can also be very effective in making teeth appear longer and more pronounced in the face. Because the skin between your nose and top lip descends with age due to collagen loss, it’s common to be unable to see your top teeth when you talk or smile; therefore, lengthening the teeth and making top teeth more visible helps to reverse this somewhat.

Facelift Melbourne CBD City Victoria Australia, Fillers Melbourne, Plastic Surgeon Melbourne, Melbourne Plastic Surgery | Plastic and Reconstructive, Smile Makeover Dental facelift

Facelift Melbourne CBD City Victoria Australia, Fillers Melbourne, Plastic Surgeon Melbourne, Melbourne Plastic Surgery | Plastic and Reconstructive, Smile Makeover Dental facelift

It is not only your front teeth that can become less visible as you age. Back teeth can move inwards over time, and many people have a narrow arch shape. When we look at the smile from the front, there is a “black corridor” because the back teeth are not visible. You can widen the smile by reshaping the arch with straightening or veneers, which then supports the cheeks and gives a much fuller smile.

We dubs treatments such as this as ‘the dental facelift’, as straightening teeth can help to support the cheeks and deliver an overall lifting effect that never looks ‘fake’. Straightening procedures can take over a year to complete in complex cases and cost thousands of dollars, and while the effects of teeth whitening can be immediate, it’s critical to seek treatment from an experienced, highly trained, and licenced dental professional.

Gums in their youth

Just as bonding and veneers can give the appearance of’more teeth,”more gums’ give the appearance of a healthier, younger-looking mouth.

Keeping our gums strong and healthy as we age is critical because our gums hold our teeth in place and prevent bacteria from growing in our mouth, all of which contributes to the cosmetic impact of teeth. Our gums shrink as we age, so some recession is normal, and some people are genetically predisposed to gum recession, but there are things you can do to slow down the process and even stop gum shrinkage.

To thoroughly clean teeth and avoid some of the scrubbing that can occur with manual brushing, I recommend using an electric toothbrush. Make certain that your technique is efficient and gentle. It’s also critical not to overbrush – you don’t have to brush your teeth after every meal (twice a day is ideal). Consider it like skincare: if you scrub your face too hard and wash it too frequently, it will become dry and more prone to damage and fine lines. In terms of gum recession, the same is true for teeth. For skin, a morning wash followed by a double cleanse at the end of the day will suffice, and brushing twice a day is ideal for maintaining optimal tooth and gum health. Flossing once a day is also essential for maintaining ‘young gums.

Why porcelain veneers are superior to fillers and facelifts

In 2016, over 130,000 facelifts were performed, a 4% increase over 2015. Facelifts are procedures used to improve the appearance of the face and neck by reducing sagging, drooping, and wrinkling. Simply put, people want a younger-looking face. According to a CNN report on the ASPS statistics, fewer patients are requesting procedures to remove excess skin. Patients prefer something that uses fillers to plump up their skin.

Facelift Melbourne CBD City Victoria Australia, Fillers Melbourne, Plastic Surgeon Melbourne, Melbourne Plastic Surgery | Plastic and Reconstructive, Smile Makeover Dental facelift

Did you know that porcelain veneers can enhance a person’s lips? While veneers and Lumineers are as thin as contact lenses (though far more durable), they are meticulously placed on top of a patient’s natural teeth and bonded in place to create a stunning cosmetic dentistry enhancement. By default, this procedure causes lips to plump out slightly. While the pout may not be as dramatic as Kim Kardashian’s, it will be far more natural and last longer. Fillers must be refreshed over time, unlike porcelain veneers, which can last for decades if properly cared for.

Replace missing teeth to give yourself a more youthful appearance

Have you ever noticed celebrities who have had botched facelifts or overdosed on fillers? You have, of course. You probably know Priscilla Presley, Daryl Hannah, Mickey Rourke, and Meg Ryan off the top of your head. People sometimes overdo cosmetic procedures in an attempt to fight ageing and maintain their youthful appearance, but we believe that ageing gracefully is possible.

If your teeth are ageing you, solutions are available and, in many cases, painless. A smile makeover can completely transform your face while still leaving you looking completely natural – just a better version of yourself with no plastics involved.

For example, if you have jowls, drooping cheeks, or a compressed appearance, the first question is: Are any teeth missing? A missing tooth or teeth alters the shape of your face by changing the bulk of your jawbone and, as a result, the shape of your jawline. Missing teeth can drastically alter your appearance, making you appear much older than you are.

What is the solution? There are three in total:

  • Dental implants: Dental implants are one of the most effective methods of replacing missing teeth. They are secured in your jawbone. They remain in place indefinitely while stimulating and preserving your jawbone. Dental implants prevent your jaw from sagging due to missing teeth and roots.
  • Dentures: We understand that if you’re trying to look younger, the last thing you want to do is wear dentures and deal with adhesives. Modern dentures can be combined with dental implants for a secure and natural appearance (so you don’t feel old or have to take your teeth out every night).
  • Porcelain fixed dental bridges: Bridges close gaps by attaching a porcelain tooth to hidden clasps that are then secured to the teeth on either side (both of which sport a porcelain crown). Bridges cannot be removed once they have been installed.
A smile makeover can help you look younger.
  • If your face is beginning to show signs of ageing, use the to revitalise your appearance.

How dentistry can make your lips look fuller

If lip fillers or a lip lift appeal to you, there are dentistry alternatives that may look less ‘done’ while also improving the health of your teeth over time.

Facelift Melbourne CBD City Victoria Australia, Fillers Melbourne, Plastic Surgeon Melbourne, Melbourne Plastic Surgery | Plastic and Reconstructive, Smile Makeover Dental facelift

So, how do veneers compare to plumping lip treatments?

Our teeth, like our skin, thin with age, allowing our lips to move inwards. Because the lip has a supportive structure behind it, adding volume to the outer surface of the teeth allows it to lift naturally. This can result in plumper-looking lips—I’d say it can increase the appearance of fullness by 25% on average, and it looks natural, so additional lip filler may be unnecessary.  The slight elevation of the lips can also help to soften fine lines around the mouth.

That covers the potential cosmetic benefits, but veneers can provide additional benefits in terms of wear and tear:

Veneers are essentially a method of laminating the teeth, which can be especially beneficial as you get older because it protects the enamel from eroding. While enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, you cannot reverse this ageing process because your body cannot reproduce enamel, so veneers serve as a substitute for your natural enamel.

Veneers are sculpted to your teeth and can help with staining or crookedness, but any veneers you get must match the colour and shape of the rest of your teeth.

If veneers are out of your price range or are not right for you, consider composite bonding as an alternative. It is a one-step procedure in which a bonding material is painted onto teeth and hardened with a high-frequency light before being polished and smoothed. The treatment, like porcelain veneers, can address everything from tooth colour to shape, but it is less durable and more prone to chipping and staining. Composite bonding can last for up to five years.

The Dental Face Lift is a non-surgical procedure that replaces entire teeth or missing enamel that has accumulated over time.
The lower face regains its youthful verticality by rebuilding the teeth to their original dimensions.

When necessary, new dentures can be made that will provide better support and upright ‘down turned’ lips.

Dental facelifts can subtly give a fresh faced look and younger looking teeth giving you something to really smile about.

How to Get a Dental Facelift Without Plastic Surgery

It may seem strange, but you can now have a dental facelift without having to undergo surgery. Some dentists today use techniques that not only improve your bite and smile but can also remove years from your appearance. Some claim that this technique is a very effective and non-surgical way to reduce the signs of ageing on the face, such as wrinkles and sagging skin. Tooth restoration is frequently included as part of a dental facelift.

To be clear, as we age, our dental structures begin to deteriorate, and if our teeth become worn or missing, our faces shrink and take on a sunken-in appearance. A dental face lift smoothes out wrinkles and gives a person’s jawline a more pronounced and even appearance. Dental treatments and dental appliances can help you look more polished and youthful. If you’re looking for a dentist who can fix my teeth, a cosmetic dentist can assist you. A tooth restoration procedure can help you look younger.

A plastic retainer is used in some dental practises to strengthen a person’s facial muscles. This procedure causes the jaw to rest in a higher position, making the patient appear younger. Patients who use this retainer wear it for several months until their facial muscles strengthen, at which point they will have dental crowns placed on all of their teeth to increase the height of their jaw.

Remember that a dental facelift is more than just cosmetic dentistry. A dental facelift not only improves the appearance of your teeth and smile, but it also improves your profile, jaw line, chin position, and face shape. Furthermore, in some cases, it can improve your health, especially if your teeth are not in proper alignment and it affects your chewing and eating.

What exactly is a nonsurgical facelift?

If you are dissatisfied with your sagging facial tissues, you may be considering facelift surgery. Surgical facelifts can help you look younger by cutting, stretching, and repositioning your facial tissues. The issue with facelift surgery is that your facial tissues are simply reacting to changes in your mouth and jaw, which help shape your face.

A non-surgical facelift from a dentist is often the best way to rejuvenate your appearance by restoring those underlying structures so that your teeth and bones are back in the position they once occupied. We can help you achieve a more youthful facial appearance by restoring a more youthful dental structure with Cosmetic & Comprehensive Dentistry.  This is described in detail below, but the best way to learn if it is right for you is to get an evaluation by a dentist.

Is a Non-Surgical Facelift Right for Me?

Non-surgical facelift dental services concentrate on restoring your smile so that sunken or hollow areas can be corrected naturally rather than by pulling or cutting the skin with a surgical facelift. Missing teeth, teeth that have worn down over time, TMJ issues, uncorrected bite issues, and other issues can be addressed. It’s incredible how the underlying jaw structure, once aligned and supported by full teeth and prostheses, can naturally restore fullness to the face.

What Are the Advantages of Non-Surgical Facelifting?

A surgical facelift is frequently used to correct sunken cheeks, depressed areas around the mouth, hanging jowls, and other signs of ageing. However, surgical facelifts necessitate a lengthy recovery period as well as the risks associated with major invasive surgery. Furthermore, we’ve all seen cases of botched surgical facelifts, in which the patient’s face appears stretched and taut.

What if you could achieve many of the same facial rejuvenation benefits by using dental techniques like crown placement, replacing lost teeth with implants or bridges, adjusting misaligned jaws, or straightening teeth? This is what a non-surgical facelift can accomplish.

  • Many wrinkles and sunken areas disappear when teeth are restored because they have support behind them in the dental structure.
Teeth restoration helps to lengthen the face, making it less round and flattened.
The jawline is enhanced when the jaw is properly positioned. This can be used to correct a “weak” chin caused by an overbite or an underbite. All of this is possible by restoring various aspects of your dental health and structure. Isn’t that a more natural way to achieve a younger-looking face?

How Non-Surgical Facelifts Function

Non-surgical facelifts improve your facial appearance by restoring your teeth and mouth to their former state. When you lose teeth, your face shortens and becomes more flattened and round. Sunken cheeks and lips are possible. Typical dentures may not be much help because they do not stay in place to fill the role that your missing teeth played. Dentures that are properly fitted, on the other hand, can restore your facial appearance.

Even if you haven’t lost any teeth, chipped, cracked, or crooked teeth can cause your jaw to shift. An injury or a concussive jolt can also cause your jaw to move out of place. Poorly positioned jaws can give the appearance of a receding chin(which can make your nose look large) or crooked jaw.

How does a non-surgical facelift work?

Depending on the patient, these can be a variety of treatments. Your facial structure and oral structure are inextricably linked. As a result, problems like a misaligned jaw or worn teeth can have an effect on your facial appearance, making you appear older.

During your consultation or treatment, we will examine you to determine what issues are causing problems. There may be several treatment options. These are some of the options.

Is it painful to have a non-surgical facelift?

These procedures are not painful because of modern local anaesthesia. There may be some soreness afterwards, but it is easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

Are Non-Surgical Facelifts Risky?

These are dental procedures that have been done thousands of times over the years. They are secure. Common dental procedures include crown placement and dental implant placement. When compared to the risks associated with a surgical facelift, which include everything from a reaction to general anaesthesia to poor wound healing, there is no comparison to the natural results provided by a non-surgical dental facelift.

How long does it take to recover from a non-surgical facelift?

It is not difficult to recover from these cosmetic dentistry procedures, TMJ treatment, possible orthodontics, and other treatments associated with a non-surgical facelift. Most procedures leave little to no pain behind. They do not require any downtime.

Is non-surgical facelifting covered by insurance?

Some of these treatments may be covered by your dental insurance, while others may not. It depends on whether your insurance company considers the procedure cosmetic rather than structural or necessary. We work with your insurance company to ensure that you have the most coverage possible.

Smile Rejuvenation Advantages for a Non-surgical Dental Facelift

Facelift surgery does not improve your facial proportions. Instead, plastic surgeons will treat you as if you have “excess” skin on your face. They trim away the excess and stretch your skin until it fits snugly over your shortened bones and teeth. This can significantly alter your facial appearance, and you may no longer resemble yourself. However, by restoring your natural proportions with your teeth, we can rejuvenate your face. You’ll look like yourself, only younger.

In addition, you can avoid problems related to surgical facelifts, such as:

  • Pain
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Scarring
  • Long recovery time
  • Missed work
  • Surgical complications

You can rejuvenate your facial appearance with a smile makeover without any of these issues or risks. While a facelift may require up to a month of recovery, your smile makeover will only require you to miss one day of work.

You’ll also have a bright, beautiful smile again, which will make you appear younger.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 1

General Facts about Whitening your Teeth

  • All bleaching systems whiten your teeth, but when bleaching is completed, the colour will fade about half a shade. Using the tray method in conjunction with In-Office whitening helps to maintain, stabilize and advance the desired result.
  • Bleaching can only be performed on clean, healthy teeth and healthy gums.
  • Bleaching will not whiten existing fillings and crowns. Existing work may need to be changed so as to achieve consistent colour.
  • Bleaching only works on enamel. Teeth which have thin enamel due to chemical or physical abrasion will whiten poorly.
  • Sensitive teeth are the most commonly reported side effect.
  •

Teeth Whitening FAQs 2

Who Should Not Undergo Teeth Whitening or Bleaching?

It is not advisable to undertake whitening procedures under these circumstances

  • Age and pregnancy issues. Here whitening is not available for those under 16 years of age as the nerve of the teeth is large at this stage of life. It could render the nerve more sensitive or cause irritation. Pregnant or lactating women are also not advised to use this method.
  • Sensitive teeth and allergies. Those having sensitive teeth or gums, with receding or defective repairs need to see their dentist before engaging a whitening process. Allergies to peroxide will definitely not be favoured with a bleaching product
  • Gum disease, damaged teeth, cavities, and exposed roots. People with damaged teeth or worn enamel are not advised to use any bleaching method. A bleaching agent might enter any cavity and cause an inside damage. Hence it is necessary to treat such defects before launching into a whitening session. Bleaching does not work on roots also since they do not have the enamel layer on which bleaching acts.
  • Fillings, crowns and restored portions. Dental restorations sometimes make use of colored fillings or resin based products (crowns, veneers, bridges) and these do not whiten with bleaching. So an unequal whitening pattern may appear if bleaching is applied under these conditions. It is better to proceed with whitening before attempting any restoration exercise on the teeth. Best on your individual needs, we will advise on the method of treatment applicable in such cases, and confirming whether any importance is to be given to the bleaching or restoration exercise first.
  • Those expecting dramatic happenings may be disappointed with results below their expectations. People using harmful products like tobacco and wine need to be aware that the result may not stay for longer periods if they do not avoid such products. A more balanced expectation taking into consideration one’s own lifestyle and hygiene pattern would give a more objective approach to the results’ appreciation. A good standard indication is comparison of color of your teeth should be a little whiter than that of your eyes.
  • Heavily stained teeth. A light yellowish tint will definitely disappear under bleaching; less effective results would appear on brown tinted ones where as grayish or purple stained ones may not reveal any effect. Certain blue-gray stains which, are normally caused by tetracycline take even more time to whiten and require around 6 month of intensive care at the dentist’s. Darker stains may be appropriately treated by other methods, for example: veneers, crowns, bonding.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 3

How does teeth whitening work?

The peroxide ingredient in most teeth whitening products is what actually bleaches the enamel and makes your teeth whiter. The strength of the whitening treatment typically depends on the strength of the peroxide contained in the whitening product. The current percentages of peroxide in teeth whitening products are 10, 16 and 22 percent. The higher the percentage of peroxide, the higher the sensitivity and shorter wearing time.

The bleaching gel is usually hydrogen or carbamide peroxide that breaks down into oxygen molecules. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide in the gel is not as strong as that used in power or laser bleaching procedures. No strong light source or laser is needed to activate the bleaching agent. Instead, it is contact with something organic, in this case the teeth, that causes the gel to release oxygen. These molecules go into the tiny pores of the enamel and dentin, and break up the stains that block out the light.

As the stains are broken into smaller and smaller pieces, more light passes through the teeth and makes them look lighter. Stains that are accumulated over time that are yellow to slightly brown produce the best results. Teeth that are dark brown to blue-gray are the most difficult to bleach because the stain is deeply embedded into the tooth’s structure. These types of stains are usually caused by medications taken during the development of the teeth such as tetracycline, and can take a minimum of three weeks to see results, and as much as six months for complete results.

Depending on the bleaching gel used and the length of time it is worn, results can be seen within an hour, overnight or within three to four days. Complete results can be achieved in as little as a week or as much as several months depending on the source of the stain and the ability of the teeth or tooth to be bleached. The whitening procedure may last for up to three years — even longer in some cases, depending on personal habits. To brighten the color back up, a simple process of bleaching for one or two nights with a single syringe is usually sufficient.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 4

Does it hurt?

No. Neither tooth whitening systems cause any pain, though some patients may have increased tooth sensitivity that typically lasts for 1-3 days following the in-office procedure.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 5

How long does the results last?

While these systems can significantly whiten your teeth, they will not prevent future stains from occurring. To maximize the longevity of the results, we suggest clients follow up with post-whitening habits, including a touch-up 12-16 months after the first session, daily flossing, and brushing teeth twice a day with whitening toothpaste.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 6

How much discomfort and sensitivity is there?

The amount of discomfort experienced varies from person to person, and depends on the method used. Most adults usually experience little if any discomfort, however, the discomfort should subside within 24 hours. If needed, an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory may help. If the discomfort lasts for more than 2 – 3 days, consult your dentist for more options.

  • Decreasing the sensitivity may be as easy as placing a gel fluoride, under your dentist’s instruction, in your bleaching tray for an hour or so. Other materials may be used to address the sensitivity you may experience. Check with your dentist for the best options for your paticular needs. You should discuss your goals, budget, and pain tolerance with your dentist in order to help him/her determine the procedure, or combination of procedures, that will produce the best results for you. If your teeth are sensitive after bleaching, a mild analgesic will usually be effective to make you more comfortable until your teeth return to normal.
  • GUM IRRITATION: Temporary inflammation of your gums can be caused by bleaching. This is the result of very small amounts of bleach leaking over the tray. A burning sensation in your gums may also occur. This is a minor problem and will resolve by itself in a few days. Irritation can also result from using the bleaching tray too many hours when you first start bleaching or using the bleaching tray too many hours in a row without a break: It may be necessary to reduce the number of hours you are wearing the bleaching tray or stop using it for a short time to resolve these gum problems.
  • SORE THROAT: If you overload the bleaching tray with home bleach, the excess can go down your throat and cause soreness. This soreness will also resolve in several days, assuming you spit out the excess bleach instead of swallowing it.
  • LEAKING FILLINGS OR CAVITIES: Most bleaching is indicated for the outside of the teeth (unless you already had a root canal. However, if you have any fillings that are leaking and allow the bleach to get into the inside of the teeth, damage to the nerves could result. In this case the filling needs to be redone prior to the bleaching. In addition, open cavities can also allow bleach to reach the nerves of the teeth. They should also be filled before bleaching.
  • CERVICAL ABRASION/EROSION: These conditions affect the roots of the teeth when gums recede, these are grooves, notches or depressions where the teeth meet the gums that look darker than the rest of the teeth. They look darker because there is no enamel in these areas. Even if these areas-are-not-sensitive, bleach can be potcntially penetrate the teeth and damage the nerves. Those areas should not be bleached, but should be filled after the bleaching is completed.
  • ROOT RESORPTION: This is condition where the root of the tooth starts to dissolved, either from the inside or outside. Although the cause of the resorption has been determined, studies have shown that its incidence is higher in teeth that have had a root canal and are bleached.
  • EFFECT ON FILLINGS: Even though open cavities should be filled or badly leaking filling should be refilled prior to bleaching can cause tooth coloured filling to become softer and make them more susceptible to staining. Therefore, you should be prepared to have any fillings in you front teeth replaced after bleaching. In addition, since bleaching will normally lighten teeth, but not fillings, you may need to have your fillings replaced anyway, so that they will match your newly whitened teeth.
  • TAKE NOTE: Tooth colored fillings, crowns, bridges and veneers will not lighten when your teeth are bleached. You’re Responsibilities
  • WEARING YOUR BLEACHING TRAY: It will only be effective if you conscientiously wear the bleaching tray for the prescribed number of hours per day.
  • COMMUNICATION: If you experience any severe discomfort or other problems, contact us immediately.
  • FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS of the Bleaching gel provided.
  • It’s a good idea to have a dental cleaning prior to having your teeth whitened to remove surface stains.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 7

Can You Whiten Teeth if You Have Sensitive Teeth?

Tooth sensitivity is a common side effect of teeth whitening. This can be true even for people who do not otherwise experience sensitive teeth.

If you already have sensitive teeth, the whitening process may exacerbate the condition. This is especially true in cases where store-bought tooth whitening kits are used. While inexpensive and convenient, store-bought tooth whitening kits do not come with customized application trays. This can allow solution seepage, create soft tissue discomfort, and increase the risks of tooth sensitivity.

These and other risks are significantly reduced when you choose to have your teeth whitened by a dentist. However, even professional tooth whitening can result in some discomfort.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 8

Why Tooth Whitening Causes Sensitivity

The exact cause of tooth sensitivity following whitening is not known. The leading hypothesis revolves around demineralization caused by peroxide in the bleaching gel. According to this theory, enamel erosion allows some of the active ingredients to seep into the dentin, leading to increased sensitivity.

To address this issue, some professional teeth whitening products contain fluoride to strengthen enamel during the bleaching process.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 9

Dealing with Post-Whitening Tooth Sensitivity

There is typically no cause for alarm with increased tooth sensitivity after whitening. In a majority of cases, any additional sensitivity will self-correct over the course of 24 to 48 hours. During this time, using a toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth will help. So too will avoiding hot or cold food and beverages until comfort returns.

While extremely rare, any lasting or limiting discomfort should be brought to the immediate attention of one of our experienced dentists.

Tooth whitening is among the safest and most effective cosmetic dentistry procedures available. Requiring neither tooth preparation nor a recovery period, this procedure can offer immediate results when performed in-office. We also offer take-home kits that can be used in the comfort of your own home to gradually lighten teeth over several weeks. These come with customized application trays, helping to prevent solution seepage and further reducing risks of tooth sensitivity.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 10

How long does teeth whitening last?

Teeth whitening usually lasts from one to three years before darkening of the teeth is noticed. Additionally, once your teeth have been initially whitened, typically only “touch ups” are required to maintain the whiteness.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 11

What can I do to Make my Teeth Whitening Results Last?

Aside from avoiding red wine, coffee, and smoking, there are a few additional tooth-staining items to be aware of. First, be aware of certain medications. Experts have found that certain medicines, like some antihistamines, include side effects like tooth darkening. Another thing to watch out for is trauma. When your teeth or gums sustain an injury, it can darken the underlying enamel. This causes the color of your teeth to darken as well. Lastly, make sure not to neglect your teeth. Although white teeth are aesthetically beautiful, it is important to prioritize brushing and flossing. Taking proper care of your teeth will help fight off small stains and keep your smile sparkling.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 12

I have a big event – how far in advance should I get whitening?

Teeth whitening has become a popular way to prepare for weddings and other social events where people want to look their best. But because some treatments can take time to be effective, you should make sure you leave enough time before the big day.

Home whitening kits using gels can take up to two weeks to achieve results, while whitening toothpastes can take up to four weeks and generally have less dramatic results. If you have your teeth whitened professionally by your dentist (sometimes called an “in-chair” treatment), the treatment may be completed in a single appointment.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 13

How white will my teeth get?

It’s best to have realistic expectations before undergoing any whitening treatment. Your dentist should be able to explain what you can probably expect.

Not all whitening treatments are equally effective on all people, and not all teeth will whiten to the same degree. Teeth whitening can change a tooth’s colour by several shades, meaning teeth that are more stained or discoloured won’t whiten to the same degree as teeth that were whiter originally.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 14

Guarantees? What are realistic expectations?

No one can really predict how much lighter your teeth will become. Every case is different. There are no guarantees as to the degree of whitening of your teeth.

  • The amount of whitening varies with the individual.
  • Additional whitening sessions and the use of ancillary whitening systems may be required to obtain desired results.
  • In some instances lightening is minimal or unapparent.
  • Typically, there is a two-shade improvement as seen on a dentist’s shade guide. The success rate depends upon the type of stain involved and your compliance. Bleaching can only provide a shift in colour from gray to a lighter shade of gray, for example. Bleaching does not lighten artificial materials such as resins, silicants, or porcelains.
  • The amount of Tooth or Teeth whitening varies from patient to patient and cannot be predicted or guaranteed.
  • But in general:
  • Yellow or brown teeth, surface stains, and uniformly darkened teeth are easier to whiten than grey or bluish teeth. Striped or spotted teeth are difficult to whiten.
  • The In-office Whitening System is a quick procedure that may or may not require additional whitening treatments in order to reach a desired lightened shade. Additional procedures or treatments could include take-home products or additional office visits.

Does Teeth Whitening Work on All Teeth?

According to Mouth Healthy, and organization brought to you by the ADA, not everyone is a candidate for teeth whitening treatments.

They note that while yellow teeth are likely to bleach well, brown or grey teeth may not deliver an effective result. If you are unsure if you are a proper candidate, speak with your dentist to have a thorough examination.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 16

When to Whiten if you Need Veneers or Crowns

Are you planning to get porcelain veneers or crowns? Realize that they are designed to match the color of your teeth. If you want lighter teeth, you should whiten your teeth before getting veneers or crowns so this dental work can be crafted to reflect the brighter shade of your smile. This is the best way to go about whitening with veneers.

After you’ve whitened your teeth, the tooth needs a chance to return to its healthy state and the color needs time to set. If you want to get crowns or porcelain veneers following one of these whitening treatments, you must wait a little time to let the tooth fully stabilize. This is the only way to ensure that your crowns or veneers will perfectly match the new shade of your smile. When you want to schedule whitening with veneers or crowns, wait about two weeks after your whitening treatment to begin your other dental work.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 18

Can You Whiten Crowns, Implants, and Veneers?

The short answer is “no.”

Drop those whitening strips! If you have dental implants, crowns, veneers, or dentures, you need to know the right way to keep them white.

Patients often assume that their dental prosthetics have the same characteristics as real teeth. While this is often true as far as biting and chewing are concerned, there are important differences between natural teeth and prosthetics, notably in terms of how they respond to whitening.

Traditional whitening treatments do not work on porcelain or most bonding materials, making it effectively impossible to whiten veneers, dentures, crowns, or implants once they are in your mouth.

Therefore, before you get implants, veneers, or crowns, it is important to discuss their effects on appearance with your dentist. By understanding what makes prosthetic teeth unique, you can continue to have a beautiful and functional smile.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 19

Is In-Office Teeth whitening safe?

Yes. Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. We consider tooth whitening to be the safest cosmetic dental procedure. As with any tooth whitening product, it is not recommended for children under 13 years of age and pregnant or lactating women.

Bleaching can only be performed on clean, healthy teeth and healthy gums.

Bleaching will not whiten existing fillings and crowns. Existing work may need to be changed so as to achieve consistent color.

Bleaching only works on enamel. Teeth which have thin enamel due to chemical or physical abrasion will whiten poorly.

Sensitive teeth are the most commonly reported side effect.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 20

Side effects of In-Office Teeth Whitening?

Sensitivity and some discomfort during and after the treatment may occur with some patients.

  • On rare occasions, minor tingling sensations are experienced immediately after the procedure, but always dissipate, these symptoms are only temporary and disappear within a few days. Using a sensitive toothpaste for 2 weeks prior to treatment can help prevent any sensitivity.
  • Analgesics before and after the procedure will manage the discomfort. It’s strongly advised also to have the procedure few days to few weeks before any special occasions like Weddings, anniversaries or any special events or functions.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 21

Risk on In-Office Teeth Whitening

  • Peroxide solutions have been used for many years as antiseptics in the mouth. They are also widely used for their teeth-whitening effects.
  • If tooth sensitivity develops, fluoride home care gel may be recommended for reducing sensitivity. If sensitivity persists-for more than 12 hours or is severe, please contact our office.
  • The whitening procedure can cause temporary inflammation and white spots on your gums or lips. This should resolve itself within 12 hours. If it persists. Please contact our office.
  • If you have teeth sensitivity, fillings that are breaking down, decay in your teeth, erosions of the teeth, or exposed root surfaces due to periodontal disease, the peroxide may have direct access to the affected areas. These conditions need correction prior to the whitening procedure. Please inform your dentist of such conditions prior to treatment.
  • The whitening procedure can be very effective at whitening the teeth, but will not change the colour of fillings or crown(s) already in or on your teeth. For aesthetic reasons, such fillings may need changing after the whitening procedure.
  • The whitening treatment plan has been reported not to be effective on some patients. Our office will provide our best efforts to whiten your teeth but lightening results cannot be guaranteed.
  • The In-office Teeth Whitening procedure can sometime caused discomfort during the treatment. If you believe your tolerance or threshold level to pain is low, we strongly suggest taking Analgesics One hour before your Teeth Whitening appointment to our office

Teeth Whitening FAQs 22

Post-whitening care instructions

  • For 48 hours after the treatment the teeth are susceptible to stains from red wine, fruit berries, rich coloured sauces, dark coloured vegetables, coloured spices and coloured mouthwash etc. Eat only “white foods” such as chicken, fish, white wine etc. Smoking should also be avoided for during this period.
  • Keep your recall appointments with our office.
  • If you have any questions or concerns contact our office.
  • To keep your teeth looking their best, we recommend flossing, brushing twice daily with Whitening Toothpaste, and occasional touch-ups once a month or as needed with with the At-home teeth whitening treatment to achieve a long term, long lasting result

Teeth Whitening FAQs 23

How often can you get your teeth laser whitened?

This is an excellent question. In-office whitening usually keeps your smile white for about 12 months. Teeth whitening with take-home products from a dental clinic usually lasts four to six months, and people will then need a touch-up. Over-the-counter (OTC) products that can be purchased from a drugstore or grocery store usually lasts for a couple of months before you need a touch-up. With any whitening treatment, the length that your white smile will last depending on your care and maintenance habits after the treatment. There is no official limit to the amount of time that you can get your teeth whitened. In most cases, this is a personal preference due to budget, desired results, and your likelihood to experience tooth sensitivity.

In general, there are three signs that you may be whitening too frequently: tooth sensitivity (in particular to cold air, beverages, or foods), inflamed or bleeding gums, and teeth that appear see-through along the edge. If you experience these symptoms and let them go untreated, it can lead to nerve damage in your teeth, thinning of tooth enamel, or burning of your gums. If the damage gets too severe, we may not have the ability to reverse the damage is yet another reason why in-office is typically recommended, as a trained dentist can be looking for warning signs and can provide you with suggestions on the best way to maintain your smile, and protect the longevity of your teeth and gums. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact us.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 24

How long will tooth whitening last?

Definitely this is not a lifetime result producing system. The answer to this question depends upon many factors such as diet, if you smoke, if you drink tea or coffee and what your oral hygiene program is like. Many patients choose to “touch-up” their teeth every 1 or 2 nights. “Touch-ups” are especially useful for patients that drink beverages that stain teeth, like coffee, tea, and colas.

Teeth Whitening FAQs 25

Can you permanently whitened your teeth?

Teeth whitening doesn’t last forever. Some patients are hypersensitive. Whereas Veneers can permanently whiten your teeth and at the same time, it can conceal other aesthetic flaws.

So the answer is YES with placement of porcelain veneers.

What is At-home Teeth or

Take-Home Teeth Whitening?

Home bleaching with Take-Home Teeth Whitening is a process, which can be done at home, involving a wearing of custom made bleaching tray filled with mild bleaching solution. You have to wear the bleaching-filled tray for 2-8 hours per day for about 2-4 weeks to achieve maximum results, much depends on how yellow your teeth are and how much whiter you like them to be. The advantage of home bleaching includes using them whenever it is convenient for you and possibly less cost. The disadvantages include the bother of having to wear the bleaching tray and the entire The teeth whitening system that is best for you can depend on factors such as: the amount of time you have available, your temperament, and how much money you have to spend. rest of the procedure depends on your routinely using bleaching.

Bleaching with At-home Teeth Whitening is a procedure which is designed to lighten the colour of your teeth. When done properly, bleaching will not harm your teeth or gums. Significant lightening can be achieved in the vast majority of cases, but the RESULTS CANNOT BE GUARANTEED. No two people are alike and the procedure may work faster for one person than another. RESULTS MAY VARY FROM PATIENTS TO PATIENTS.

Appointment Procedure on At-home Teeth Whitening

At the first appointment, the dentist takes impressions of the patient’s teeth and then creates a perfectly fitted mouthpiece. This mouthpiece will allow the patient to apply a bleaching solution to the teeth while protecting the rest of the mouth from contact with the bleaching chemicals.

Best Candidates for At-home Teeth Whitening

Just about anyone is candidate for bleaching. In general, the best candidates for tooth bleaching are:

  • Mature enough to fully understand the procedure
  • Knowledgeable about the procedure
  • Wanting to improve their appearance and/or comfort
  • Realistic in their expectations
  • Note, people with dark yellow or yellow-brown teeth tend to bleach better than people with grey or bluish -grey teeth. Multi-coloured teeth, especially if stained is due to tetracycline, do not bleach very well. In addition, teeth with many fillings, cavities, chips etc are usually best treated by bonding, porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns.

Risks Associated With At-home Teeth Whitening

Bleaching, like any other treatments, has some inherent risk and limitations. These are seldom serious enough to discourage you from having your teeth whitened.

In addition, there are variables, such as type of discoloration that affects your teeth, the degree to which you follow instructions, the overall condition of your teeth, etc that can affect the outcome of treatment.

  • Sensitivity in the teeth or some kind of irritation of the gums or other tissues of the mouth. Sensitivity is noticed at the beginning of bleaching process whereas irritation of soft tissues mainly come from wrong fitting of trays rather that from the bleaching agent itself. These effects disappear a couple of days after the treatment ends. This sensitivity is usually mild if your teeth are not normally sensitive
  • You can reduce an sensitivity using the following methods:
  • Do not use the tray for long periods. Shorten the use period if you encounter sensitivity problems.
  • Stop the whitening process for some days and let your teeth adapt itself with the whitening system.
  • See your dentist for a product with high-fluoride content. It will restore the mineral level of your teeth if applied to the tray for around 4 minutes before applying the bleaching agent.
  • Use toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth to brush. They normally contain potassium nitrate, which will relieve your nerve endings.
  • However, if your teeth are abnormally sensitive, bleaching may make your teeth much more sensitive for an extended period of time. Under these circumstances, you may choose to delay bleaching until we are able to complete desensitization procedures.

Pros and Cons of Professional At-Home Teeth Whitening System

Disadvantages

The dental patient must be capable of performing and complying with the whitening system’s technique and instructions.

The person must have the time and inclination to perform the whitening treatments.
It can take some weeks or even months before the final results are seen with at-home systems.

Advantages

At-home teeth whitening products usually cost less than professional teeth bleaching treatments. Some advantages and disadvantages of professional teeth whitening

The whitening effect is seen immediately.

The whitening is accomplished in just a few appointments (possibly even just one).
Professional teeth whitening usually costs more than at-home teeth whitening products.

Alternative to At-home Teeth Whitening Treatment

In-Office Bleaching — In-office teeth whitening offers excellent results. This procedure is performed in the dental office and can be done very quickly, usually in a little over an hour. In-office bleaching is expensive, but the time that you save by having immediate results can make this option appealing.

  • In addition to laser, power and home bleaching, there are over-the-counter home bleaching kits available in pharmacies and supermarkets. While these products are growing in popularity, some dentists do not recommend using them because of the increased risks. They are not as effective, and can be more damaging to the gum tissue and enamel. Teeth whitening toothpastes can make your teeth appear a little lighter by removing stains, but they do not actually bleach your teeth. Teeth whitening kits from the dentist produce faster results because they contain a stronger peroxide bleaching agent than those whitening kits purchased over the counter. A dentist-supervised system is backed by many safety tests and provides the patient with assurance if questions or problems arise. LEARN MORE

How about over the counter Tooth Whitening and Dental Bleaching system or products?

Most of the whitening products (such as the strips) on the market will either take much longer (3 weeks) to obtain less/similar results and some products such as the whitening toothpastes or gels are just not effective. A lot of the whitening toothpastes are very abrasive and are meant to just get rid of surface stains and not to actually bleach the teeth. In addition due to their abrasiveness they may cause tooth sensitivity in the long run.
