So it happened: one of your porcelain veneers fell completely off while you were eating, talking, or even sleeping. Because a veneer resembles a tooth, your first reaction is to panic. After closer inspection, you realise it’s just one of your veneers, which leaves you wondering what to do next. A veneer falling off isn’t as serious as a tooth falling out, but it can still be frightening, and if the veneer is on one of your front teeth, it can mean keeping your smile hidden.
A great smile has magical powers. Studies show that the majority of people today believe that having an attractive smile can have a positive impact on getting the job of your dreams, succeeding at work, finding the perfect mate, and even making new friends.
Your smile is your calling card. Whether you’re having social interactions with your family and friends, attending a family wedding, or simply going about your daily activities and interactions, – your smile has an immediate impact on the way people perceive you. And if you’re embarrassed about your teeth – because of missing teeth, aged smiles, worn down teeth, chips, crookedness, colour and among other aesthetic imperfections– people aren’t perceiving the most confident and attractive version of you. Get expert cosmetic dental enhancement and makeover at Vogue Smiles Melbourne. We are here to help.
Veneers are the pinnacle of cosmetic dentistry, but they are not without flaws. They, like almost everything else in life, have advantages and disadvantages. The fact that veneers occasionally fall off is a serious disadvantage. Because most people who get veneers will want to replace them in a decade or so, the cement we use to attach the veneer to the tooth is not intended to be a permanent binder. Unfortunately, this means that they can come off when under too much pressure.
Damage is one of the most common reasons for veneers to fall off. Clenching or grinding your teeth can damage your veneers. If you apply this type of pressure to your veneers on a nightly, daily, or both basis, they may become loose and fall off. Your veneers may also fall off if you eat hard candy, ice (which you should not chew), or sticky candy on a regular basis. Each of these factors has the potential to harm your teeth and cause your veneers to become loose.
If you have tooth decay, it can harm your teeth and cause your veneers to fall off. Tooth decay can loosen the chemical bond that holds the veneer in place, causing your dental veneer to fall off. To avoid tooth decay, it is critical to maintain excellent oral health after receiving porcelain veneers.
One of the most common reasons for veneers to fall off is that they are old and need to be replaced. Most veneers have a lifespan of 15 to 25 years, depending on the material, habits, and other factors. The bonding may weaken over time and gradually detach the veneers from the teeth. Age can also cause receding bone and jawline, causing veneers to not fit properly.
If your veneers come loose, your first thought may be to superglue them back on. However, this is exactly what you should not do. The first step is to make an appointment with us. Remember to bring your veneer to your appointment. During your consultation, we will try to figure out why your veneer fell off in the first place. If the bonding was poor, we may be able to remove the rest of the bonding and reapply the veneer to the tooth.
If you have tooth clenching and grinding, you may need to replace your veneers and wear a night guard at night, or you may need TMJ treatment.
We will also advise you on whether you require new veneers. If they’re old, don’t fit properly, or are damaged beyond repair, you’ll need to replace them. The good news is that getting porcelain veneers from a highly qualified dentist will prevent any future problems. Following the installation of your new veneers, you should see your dentist every six months.
Because we can address issues before they cause problems, your veneers will not fall off.
If a porcelain laminate has simply debonded (has come off your tooth but is still in one piece), we may be able to reattach it.
Your first step should be to schedule an exam with us to assess your specific situation. Yes, re-bonding a de-bonded veneer is possible as long as the veneer is intact and free of damage. Veneers are very thin facings that are only held in place by an adhesive bond on the front of teeth. As a result, they are either bonded or not.
Porcelain veneers that have chipped, cracked, or splintered can sometimes be repaired with a composite resin, but this material isn’t as lifelike or durable as dental porcelain and will most likely cause problems in the future. A porcelain veneer that cannot be reattached must usually be replaced.
The success of the repair will be determined by how well the internal porcelain surface of the veneer (now coated with bonding from the initial attachment) can be renewed for the re-bonding process and how suitable the tooth’s surface is for veneer placement.
To rebond the veneer we need first to extensively reprepare and recondition its internal porcelain surface.
In our office, we send your debonded Veneer to our Dental ceramist or lab to reprepare and recondition its internal porcelain surface of your veneer. Once that is done, we will call and book you in for a recementation booking. For optimal bonding, the ceramist will have to remove all the remaining cement on the internal surface of your veneer by sandblasting it. Now this process carries a risk that while doing the procedure, your very thin veneers will crack- which our lab is not willing to accept any liability. It is a risk that you take should your veneers was damaged in the process of repreparing and reconditioning its internal porcelain surface. Take note it is a remote possibility but it is still a possibility. If that happened, you will need a new veneer.
We don’t offer a same day recementation of your debonded veneer as we have to send it to our lab for optimal bonding process. Unfortunately, it is not possible that you can get a great adhesion of your debonded veneer on the tooth without properly preparing it first. We can create for you a temporary Composite veneer while waiting for your Porcelain veneer from the lab.
