Gaps between the teeth can have a genetic cause or develop over time as the result of certain habits. Some common causes of gapped teeth include:
There are many treatments available to close gaps between the teeth and improve the smile’s appearance. The type of treatment depends on the needs of the individual.
Veneers are sheaths of material fabricated to the ideal shape, size, and color to create the desired effect. Though it is possible to obtain veneers made of composite, porcelain is ideal for several reasons. With this material, we create a strong, durable structure that looks so much like natural enamel that one tooth can be treated and not stand out in the smile as looking fake. Veneers are made from a model of your tooth or teeth and are an excellent way to cover cosmetic concerns such as discoloration, gaps, chips, mild misalignment, and more.
Transforming your smile with porcelain veneers takes only a few visits. During the first visit, you discuss the physical appearance of your smile and explain what you would like to change. Dr. Castro will perform a dental examination to make sure that no problems such as cavities exist. Performing cosmetic dental treatment without this step could compromise the longevity of results. After teeth and gums have been confirmed in healthy condition, the fun begins.
Planning your perfect smile is all about the details. With Dr. Castro, you will plan the shape, size, and colour of your veneers to complement surrounding teeth and all other facial features perfectly. The specifications set forth in our office will be forwarded to the dental lab along with imaging and impressions to aid in the fabrication of veneers.
In the follow up visit, veneers will be ready for placement. At this time, Dr. Castro will set the veneers in place and assess their appearance. If any alterations are needed, they will be made right in our office. When you leave this appointment, it will be with a beautiful new smile you are proud to put on display WITHOUT THOSE GAPS!
To begin the process of making the veneers, our dentist must make room for the veneer by removing a thin layer of enamel from each tooth that will be covered. Once the teeth have been prepared, our dentist makes impression of the teeth, which will be used to create the custom veneers in a dental laboratory. A temporary veneer will be used to cover the teeth until the porcelain veneers are returned to the dentist’s office. The custom veneers will be attached to the front of the teeth with a special resin bonding agent cement. Our dentist will adjust the veneers as needed to give you a comfortable fit.
A follow-up appointment is usually scheduled for about a week after the veneers are placed to make sure the bond is secure and the fit is still comfortable. Porcelain veneers are more resistant to staining than your natural enamel, but to keep the veneers in their best condition, it is advised to avoid staining foods and drinks, like coffee, soda, tea, and red wine. Patients should continue to follow a good home oral care routine, including brushing their teeth with a non-abrasive toothpaste, flossing, and visiting our dentist for professional cleanings and dental exams. With good care, porcelain veneers can last up to 20 years.
