What are Porcelain or Ceramic veneers?
Veneers -- usually called either ceramic veneers or
porcelain veneers -- are thin shells of ceramic material
which are permanently bonded to the front surface of teeth.
They can be applied to multiple teeth on both the top and
bottom rows.
They are very natural-looking when placed correctly. They
have the same durability as a natural tooth and can be
colored to match the shade of the real teeth surrounding
them. The exactness of the color matching is based largely
upon the skill of your cosmetic dentist. Be sure to ask
questions beforehand regarding your dentist's experience
with veneer placement and color matching.
One of the most popular and asked-for procedures today in
the field of cosmetic dentistry is "Instant Orthodontics."
Instant orthodontics refers to the use of porcelain veneers
to:
Porcelain veneers are about as thick as a
contact lens. Despite the slimmest of profiles, and despite the
fact that by itself, porcelain is brittle, they are extremely
strong and durable when bonded to the teeth. And because of
their glass-like ceramic composition, which adds a lustrous
translucency to them, they resemble tooth enamel.
This is where a smile makeover has a distinct advantage. With
porcelain veneers you can change the color, size, shape and
positioning of your teeth and create a whole new smile. Not to
mention the fact that it can be done in as little as two to
three weeks!
How it is done: The "Instant
Orthodontics" Process
1. Evaluation: Not everyone is a
candidate for Instant Orthodontics. Teeth that are too crowded
can be difficult to optimally correct and a lot depends upon the
dentist's skill level. There are some cases where elective
endodontic treatment or Root Canal treatment maybe needed.
2. Consideration: Alternatives should be considered,
including, but not limited to, traditional orthodontics and
Invisalign.
3. Examination: If Instant Orthodontics is the
ultimate decision, the patient should have a complete
examination (x-ray, digital photos, and models of teeth).
4. Visualization: Digital rendering and/or physical
wax ups may provide patient with an idea of the end result.
Below, is an example of a wax model used to help dentist and
patient visualize the future smile. Note, temporary veneers
and crowns can be adapted from the wax model, so the patient
can see how he or she looks with respect to length and
shape.
5. Preparation: First, the real teeth are lightly
buffed down. This prepares them for the slight additional
thickness of the veneer. Approximately half a millimeter of
tooth is removed. Often, a local anesthetic is used during
this buffing procedure. A mold is then taken of the teeth.
The mold is sent to a laboratory, and used to create the
permanent veneers. While these are being created, sometimes
temporary veneers are placed until the final veneers are
ready.
6. Temporaries: Before completion, temporary veneers
are placed on the patient. The patient leaves with a preview
of the final new smile.
7. Permanents: At the next appointment, the temporary
veneers are removed and the permanent veneers are tried,
fitted, and tenaciously bonded to the teeth.
8. Completion: Then comes the best part. The patient
is given a mirror, and Voila!, watch their face light up as
they view their new smile.
9. The final appointment is a check-up, and takes places
about one to two weeks after the veneers have been affixed.
